Essentially if a white man said something about a black man it was true. The black man could try to defend
himself but it was useless. Even the most dishonest white man was considered more truthful than a black man. This was
the case with Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell lied and said that Tom Robinson, a black man, beat and raped Bob's daughter, Mayella. Because
Tom was black and Bob was white, Tom was charged guilty in his trial and sent to the Abbotsville prison. Atticus proved to
all of Maycomb that Tom was telling the truth and that he was indeed not guilty. The jury did not want to go against society
so they said that Bob was telling the truth. This was just wrong.

Tom was honest but due to the color of his skin against the color of the Ewell's skin, Tom was unjustly
put in prison. There he tried to escape. The guards shot him seventeen times as he fled. Shooting him
that many times was also justified because Tom was black and the guards were white.
