Nelle Harper Lee was born in Monroeville Alabama on April 28, 1926. Her parents are Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances
Finch Lee. She is the youngest of four children. In 1957 Lee sent the To Kill a Mockingbird manuscript
to J. B. Lippincot company who told her that the novel was "a series of short stories strung together". She spent the
next two and a half years rewriting it and in 1960 it was to be her only published book of her life. As of January 13 2006
she is still alive.
The people and places of Harper Lee's novel are based almost exactly on places and people of a town in Alabama called
Monroesville. All of the pictures used in this website of places in the novel are actually pictures of the same buildings
in Monroesville.
